Artificial Intelligence for Surgery

The Distributed Robotics Lab (DRL) at MIT CSAIL and Surgical Artificial Intelligence Lab (SAIL) at MGH are collaborating to develop AI tools to assist surgery. The work applies to computer-assisted laparoscopic surgery which relies upon strong fundamental automated understanding of surgical workflow from videos. Deep learning has been successfully applied to different tasks related with surgery workflow analysis from video streams. In this project, we focus on further design a model which can understand the surgery, predict future surgical events and assist decision making for surgeons. The UROP will involve the development of some specific research aspects of the project, as well as robustifying the pipeline and comparing to existing baseline methods for benchmark pipeline.
